Call to brighten the community through Run for the Arts

A morning out on the roads will help bring fresh street art to North East Hamilton thanks to the Bermuda National Gallery’s Run for the Arts.

Nhuri Bashir, the cofounder of Burnt House Productions — which helped to create the Bermuda Walls Mural Festival — said that registration fees would go into “art installations in the North East Hamilton area”.

He pointed to the colourful Love Thy Neighbourroadside mural by Shanna Hollis painted at the verge of Palmetto Road as an example of what the event could achieve.

“That was done with the proceeds from last year’s race,” Mr Bashir said. “It’s all about raising money for local beautification projects.”

Participants can lace up their shoes for a range of events on October 26: the one-mile children’s race, which is a new category this year, along with the 5K run, the 5K competitive walk and the 5K non-competitive walk or run.

The Sunday event is open to serious athletes or just members of the community looking to take in the sights and sounds of the area. Registration is online.

It will set out and finish at the Parsons Road park, with the children’s race beginning at 8am and all other events to start at 8.30am.

Mr Bashir added that a Friday evening reception would be held on October 24, at the Bermuda National Gallery in Hamilton’s City Hall, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, with refreshments and entertainment.

The event is sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association.
