Letter to the Editor: Jamaica will rise again – bigger and better

Dear Sir,

As we watch the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on our beloved Jamaica, my heart goes out to the resilient people of that beautiful island. Jamaicans have long been known for their unwavering strength, courage and unbreakable spirit. Time and again, they have shown the world that no matter how fierce the storm, the soul of Jamaica cannot be shaken.

To our Jamaican brothers and sisters here in Bermuda, I understand the deep sense of worry and helplessness that comes when your homeland is under threat. The anxiety of waiting for news, the sleepless nights wondering if loved ones are safe, and the heavy heart that follows such uncertainty — these emotions are painfully familiar. My own memories of Hurricane Dorian, which ravaged two family islands in the Bahamas six years ago, came flooding back as I saw the images of destruction in Jamaica. I know too well the trauma of watching your home town and history swept away by nature’s fury.

But I also know that, in times such as these, the indomitable Caribbean spirit rises. Jamaicans are a people of extraordinary faith, perseverance and unity. When faced with adversity, they turn pain into purpose and despair into determination. This strength — borne of history, culture and an unyielding love for one another — is what will guide them through this dark hour.

To those in Jamaica who are struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, please know that you are not alone. The world is watching, praying and standing beside you. From Bermuda to the Bahamas and beyond, hearts are united in solidarity and love. Your courage continues to inspire nations far and wide.

Rebuilding after such devastation may feel overwhelming, but if there is one thing I have learnt, it’s that resilience has no limits when fuelled by hope and community. Help will come — from near and far — and with it, the opportunity to rebuild not just what was lost, but something even stronger, safer and better than before.

To my Caribbean brothers and sisters, we must continue to support one another, uplift your neighbours, and hold on to faith. Even from afar, your love, prayers and unity can make a difference. Together, we stand with Jamaica in spirit and strength.

Jamaica will rise again — bigger, better and more beautiful than ever. The world loves you, admires your courage and believes in your future. As your national motto proudly reminds us: “Out of Many, One People”.
