Man jailed for sexually touching teenager

A man who sexually touched a minor has been sentenced to two years behind bars.

Bryan Butterfield, 59, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a young person while in a position of trust during an earlier appearance in Magistrates’ Court.

Butterfield, from Hamilton Parish, initially denied the offence.

He also disputed a second charge of sexual exploitation involving the same victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

The court heard that Butterfield committed the offence between June and September 2020, when the victim was aged between 14 and 16.

He told the victim to keep the incident a secret, but she sought support at school and the matter was reported to police.

Prosecutors decided not to proceed with the second charge, but requested it stay on file until Butterfield’s sentencing.

The two-year sentence was meted out last month by Magistrate Auralee Cassidy.

She ordered Butterfield to complete one year of probation after his release from prison.

Butterfield is also required to have his name added to the sex offenders register.
