Packages of illegal drugs estimated at a street value of $800,000 have been seized in a joint operation between the Bermuda Police Service drugs unit and customs officers.

A BPS spokesman said a male suspect had been arrested in connection with the matter.

He added that customs officers played “a critical role” in the detection and interception of the contraband.

The spokesman added: “This operation represents more than just a significant financial loss to organised criminal networks.

“By preventing these dangerous substances from reaching the streets, the joint efforts of the BPS and the customs department have helped avert the social harm and criminal activity often associated with illegal drug trafficking.”

Lucinda Pearman, the Collector of Customs, issued a joint statement with Acting Superintendent Jason Smith, who heads the BPS crime division.

“This successful operation highlights the importance of the strong partnership between our two agencies. Customs officers played a major and decisive role in this seizure,” they said.

“Their vigilance and expertise at the border were critical to this interception.”

Police said the arrested man was released on bail while investigations continue, with a court appearance expected.
