Public advised to alert police over washed-up packages
“Suspicious packages” which have washed ashore on some South Shore beaches in recent weeks should not be handled if discovered, police have warned.
The packages, which have been depicted in social media posts, are understood by The Royal Gazette to be similar in appearance to items seen in the past that contained illegal drugs.
A police spokesman said that while there was no indication of a threat to public safety, anyone encountering the items should not touch or open them, as they could contain “substances that could pose a health risk if handled”.
He added: “We also urge that you do not go in search of these packages or take possession of them should you find any.”
The public were advised to keep a safe distance, call 911 or 211 and provide a description and location of the item.
