Drivers warned to refrain from abusing roadworks crew

Construction crews have reportedly been subject to verbal abuse and confrontations from motorists while trenching works continue on Middle Road in Southampton.

The Ministry of Public Works and Environment called on drivers and riders to exercise patience and courtesy, adding it was “deeply concerned” by reports of verbal and — in some cases — physically confrontational behaviour towards construction workers.

A spokesman said: “Such conduct is unacceptable and poses serious risks to worker safety and public safety.

“For the safety of construction crews and road users alike, motorists are strongly urged to remain in their vehicles, refrain from confrontational behaviour, follow the instructions of traffic controllers and construction personnel and comply with all traffic signals and signage.”

The works include the installation of a new water line near Industrial Park Road.

The project, along with the upcoming Belco underground trenching, was said to be critical for modernising underground infrastructure and ensuring the long-term reliability of essential services.

Drivers were advised that Middle Road, from the west to Barnes Corner, offers no viable alternative routes for eastbound traffic, making an element of delay unavoidable.

The project is expected to continue for at least one month, with traffic moving alongside an open trench and active construction.

Motorists were reminded that unsafe or aggressive behaviour near work sites may result in serious consequences.

The ministry thanked the public for its co-operation, calling the essential infrastructure upgrades in the national interest.
