One person was arrested this morning after armed officers and a canine unit swept through the outdoor area of a Warwick shopping site.

Officers carried out the operation on Middle Road and in the parking lot that serves Hayward Liquor Store, The Sports Source and Warwick Pharmacy at about 11am.

Police confirmed the procedure led to the arrest of a suspect in connection with an ongoing investigation.

Firearms officers were stationed throughout the parking lot and across the street, opposite the PHC Stadium, as the incident unfolded. Other officers later arrived at the scene.

A police spokesman said the activity led to “minor traffic disruption as officers sought to secure the scene in the interest of public safety”.

Bystanders said that officers took away two men separately and a police dog examined a vehicle before it was driven off.

It is understood that no armed police entered any of the shops.

One store manager told The Royal Gazette that she saw armed officers arrive and immediately locked the doors of the business as the drama unfolded.

The Bermuda Police Service thanked the public for their patience and co-operation during the operation.
