Tight relegation battle continues
All eyes will be on the bottom half of the Premier Division this weekend with teams in the relegation zone, or hovering just above, attempting to steer their way to safety.
Only four points separate seventh place St George’s Colts from bottom team Boulevard, who along with Young Men’s Social Club find themselves anchored in the drop zone.
Blazers host X-Roads Warriors at Bernard Park tonight (8pm) and will be high on confidence having picked up their first win of the season last time out against Bluebirds in a nine-goal thriller.
X-Roads, who were promoted along with their hosts last season, got their return to the top flight off to a flyer and at one stage topped the standings.
However, pickings have been lean since, having taken only three points from their last nine fixtures and gone without a win since beating Blazers 3-2 in the first league meeting between the teams.
The remaining three Premier Division matches will take place tomorrow.
St George’s welcome title hopefuls Devonshire Colts at Wellington Oval, in dire need of points in order to ease any relegation concerns of their own.
The East Enders picked up their first league win of the new year courtesy of a convincing 3-0 demolition of Paget Lions at White Hill Field in the previous round and can complete the double with victory tomorrow playing in front of their own fans.
Visitors Colts will be keen to get back to winning ways after being held to a 1-1 draw last time out in the league against Devonshire Cougars in a Devonshire derby, and are also gunning for the double having beaten St George’s 4-0 in the first meeting between the teams in the league.
Elsewhere, Dandy Town are hoping to keep their own title hopes alive when they come up against fellow tenants Paget at White Hill Field.
Hornets are also gunning for the double having beaten Lions 1-0 in the first league clash between the rivals and their second straight win.
The remaining top flight fixture sees Bluebirds hosting mid table Cougars at Police Field.
Very little separated the teams in the first league clash between them, with hosts Cougars ultimately prevailing 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller. Tomorrow’s clash could potentially prove just as close as Mark Mills’ team also attempt the double.
There are also two First Division matches scheduled for tomorrow, with title contenders Somerset Trojans hosting Southampton Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club, and bottom side Vasco da Gama squaring off with visiting Shield champions Somerset Eagles at Police Field.
