Gomez-Caines stars for Sandys but Warwick wins another title

It was a case of different weather but the same result on the second day of interschool competition at the Arboretum on Wednesday.

In warmer conditions than those encountered by their senior school colleagues on Tuesday, Warwick Academy again came out on top in the Middle School Cross-Country Championships, taking the title with 165 points. Saltus Grammar School finished second with 197, while the Whitney Institute rounded out the top three with 496 points.

Warwick Academy also win the overall girls title with 77 points. Saltus again finished second with 108 points and Bermuda High School scored 126 to finish third. Warwick and Saltus both scored 88 points to share the overall boys title, with Whitney finishing third on 217 points.

Warwick Academy’s Colette Durkin won the under-13 girls race comfortably in 13min 25sec. Piper Howard, from BHS, finished second in 13:46, with Madeline Friend from Saltus finishing third in 14:07. Warwick Academy won the team division prize with 41 points. Iris Duda and Caroline Smatt joined Durkin in the top ten finishing in fourth and eighth respectively.

Kierra Broadley-Samuels (6th), Peggy Forster (9th) and Charleigh Gilchrist (10th) helped Saltus to score 42, which placed them in second place. BHS finished in third with 78 points. A pair of Sandys Middle School runners also finished in the top ten with Yara Muhammad finishing fifth and Zaya Cann-Berkeley finishing seventh.

Sebastian Owen won the under-13 boys race in time of 12:28. The Warwick Academy runner was followed by a trio of Saltus runners as Adrian Myers claimed silver in 12:31, Elliot Simons bronze in 12:35 and Liam Horrobin fourth in 12:42. The Saltus trio helped to lead their school to division honours with 37 points.

Maxwell Williams (7th) and Isaac Wookey (10th) were instrumental in securing second place for Warwick Academy, while Antione Whitter’s sixth place led The Whitney institute to a third-place finish.

Lucas Fereira from Dellwood Middle School had his school’s only top-ten finish of the day as he finished in fifth place. Shiloh Stevens finished in eighth and Leo Heyland in ninth to give Somersfield Academy a pair of top-ten finishers.

Warwick Academy placed four runners in the top ten to win the over-13 girls division. Elena Bortoli followed her brother’s win at the senior meet yesterday with victory in 13:35. Harper Franklin from BHS finished in second in 14:42 with Bortoli’s team-mate Lorin Roopra finishing third in 14:44. Leslie Terceira (8th) and Theodora West-Kraunz (10th) from Warwick also finished in the top ten to secure their team success with 36 points.

Franklin and her team-mates finished second with 48 points as Zoeey de los Santos (5th) joining her in the top five. Saltus Grammar had two top-ten finishers with Zara Bule (4th) and Sydney Pethick (6th). Rounding out the top ten were a pair of Mount Saint Agnes Academy runners with Kyra Simmons finishing seventh and Phoenix Williams finishing ninth.

Nicholas Gomez Caines put a halt to Warwick Academy’s winning streak when he cruised to victory in the Over-13 boys division. The Sandys Secondary Middle School runner powered his way to victory in 11:28, reversing Butterfield Mile form.

Saltus’s Spencer Haldeman finished in second with a time of 11:49, just pipping Warwick runner Dage Butterfield by one second at the line. Ethan Smith (5th) and Caleb Mello (7th) were also top-ten finishers for Warwick, helping their team with the team prize with 43 points.

Ronan Davidge (8th) and Xonti Burch (10th) helped Saltus secure second with 51 points. Hasim Ming led Whitney to a third-place finish when he crossed the line in fourth place. Julian Caisey impressed in his sixth-place finish for the Bermuda Institute. Somersfield’s Cairo Burgess finished the race in ninth place.
