Bermudian fighters brought home two medals from the Brooklyn Grappling Industries event in New York on Valentine’s Day.

Jonathan Trott and Aaron “AJ” Lugo, both from Aries Fitness Centre, delivered exceptional results, earning podium finishes and demonstrating the strength of Bermuda’s growing grappling community on the global stage.

The event had more than 600 athletes competing, providing a great experience for the Bermuda representatives.

Leading the charge was Trott, who captured first place in his division with a dominant performance. Trott’s victory marks a triumphant return to overseas competition, his first since May 2022, which his club believes reflected his dedication, discipline and consistent training.

Lugo also delivered an impressive showing, battling through a competitive field to secure a well-earned second-place finish. The 17-year-old previously competed internationally last summer at the Pan American event hosted by Jiu-Jitsu World League in California, with his club describing his latest podium result a confirmation of his continued growth and competitive resilience.

The athletes were accompanied and coached by their instructor, Cyril Whitter III, who expressed pride in their achievements and effort

“I am extremely proud of both Jonathan and AJ,” Whitter said.

“Travelling abroad to compete requires commitment, courage and focus. They represented Bermuda and Aries Sports Centre with professionalism and heart, their results reflect the hard work they’ve put in on the mats.

“Their success underscores the effectiveness of Aries Sports Centre’s training programmes. Our mission is to develop athletes capable of competing and succeeding on international platforms.”
