Officers praised for work with minor seen holding replica gun

Two police officers have been commended for their professionalism in defusing a tense situation this month involving a minor brandishing a “realistic-looking” replica firearm.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, praised Inspector Anthony Smith and Sergeant Wolde Maxwell who responded after the public raised the alarm.

Police intervened when a boy was found with the fake handgun near Prospect Primary School.

Mr Simons said: “This matter caused me considerable concern, given what could have resulted in these circumstances.”

However, he told of his deep pride in the service after being briefed on how it was handled.

Mr Maxwell recalled: “Very often, when people see armed police officers at a scene, it creates a level of tension. We were able to use calm reassurance instead of force to persuade the young man and his relatives to do the right thing and work with us to arrive at a positive outcome.”

Mr Smith said the public tended to view police solely in terms of law enforcement.

He added: “This situation required a different approach and provided an opportunity for those involved to see a gentler side of policing.”

Deputy Commissioner Na’imah Astwood highlighted the fact that the officers took the extra time and effort to ensure all parties felt safe and were listened to.

She added: “Most importantly, you prevented what could have been a tragic outcome given the uncertainty involved.

“Thank you and well done.”
