Students can explore the power of science and how it can lead to future careers at the Bermuda College this month.

The school has three events planned for March 17 and 18 to mark Roche Science Week.

It said: “Roche Science Week is designed to make science practical and achievable, helping students connect today’s curiosity to tomorrow’s careers.

“This year’s programme will focus on climate risk and resilience and how island communities like Bermuda can plan, adapt and thrive.”

Alnisha Simmons, a senior lecturer and chairwoman of science at the Bermuda College division of arts and science, said: “Roche Science Week inspires students from an early age by providing meaningful insight into the diverse fields of the natural sciences, technical sciences and allied health.”

Mark Guishard, the chief operating officer at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, will be the featured speaker for the week.

He said: “Small islands live at the front line of weather and climate impacts, which means understanding risk is not abstract, it is personal and practical.

“I want students to see how scientific and analytical skills translate into real jobs — forecasting, data science, emergency planning, engineering, environmental management, research and risk assessment that protects people and economies.”

An interactive event featuring hands-on demonstrations and an expert-led discussion will take place on March 17, with a public forum the next day.

Roche Science Week events

March 17, 9am to midday (for schools only): Hands-on demonstrations, interactive exhibits and student-led projects

March 17, 1.30pm to 3pm: Master class featuring Mark Guishard and other experts

March 18, 6.30pm to 8.30pm: A public discussion on how science and innovation shape everyday lives and future opportunities

Dr Guishard added: “Science careers are not one lane, they are a network of pathways, and programmes like this help students find their entry point.

“Whether you are drawn to oceans, weather, health, technology or management, the most important step is to start building strong foundations, ask questions and seek mentors — Bermuda College is a place where that journey can begin.”
