Bermuda’s LGBTQ+ charity is launching an art exhibition exploring what liberation, freedom and joy mean to its community.

Deep Roots: Queer Liberation will be hosted by the Bermuda Society of Arts from July 17 to August 11 and marks OutBermuda’s first art show.

OutBermuda is Bermuda's only charity dedicated specifically to supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

Its work aims to help members of the community feel seen, valued and supported through advocacy and education, community events, programmes and bursaries.

The show is billed as a Pride exhibition reflecting the many LGBTQ+ events held annually by OutBermuda to celebrate and educate.

The Bermuda Pride line up has historically included a variety of uplifting events including an open mike session, a drag brunch and the signature Pride Parade. The art exhibition is the latest feature to be added, building on the charity’s commitment to increasing visibility, opportunities and acceptance for members of the island’s LGBTQ+ community.

Joshua Samuels, the executive director of OutBermuda, said: “Bermuda Pride is about creating space for our community to be seen, heard and celebrated.

Deep Roots: Queer Liberation is an art exhibition that extends that space to queer Bermuda artists, giving them a platform to share stories, emotions and truths that are often hard to express elsewhere.

“Grounded in this year’s Pride theme, Deep Roots, this exhibition honours where we come from, celebrates our joy and strengthens the connections that help our community thrive.”

Artists of all backgrounds and media are invited to submit up to three pieces of art, one of which can include a performance or installation piece.

Artworks will be selected by a committee of OutBermuda representatives and will be for sale.

A launch reception, which is open to the public, will be held at the Bermuda Society of Arts from 5pm to 7pm on July 17, when patrons can enjoy complimentary beverages and a live DJ set.

Sophia Tessitore, the lead organiser and curator for the exhibition, said: “We’re excited to platform LGBTQ+ and allied artists in this showcase, and hope to uplift our community in celebration of Pride.

“We look forward to all the submissions we’ll receive — no matter how big or small.”

Entries can be submitted until July 12 and anonymous submissions will be accepted via www.pride.bm.

Space is limited and early submissions are encouraged. For inquiries, e-mail sophia@pride.bm.
