Shining a light on key early childhood years
The importance of healthy early childhood development has been under the spotlight this week in the Week of the Young Child.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, called the week a “vital reminder that investing in our youngest citizens is an investment in our future”.
She added: “Our ministry remains committed to strengthening programmes and partnerships that support early childhood development, empower families and ensure that every child has access to safe, nurturing and enriching environments in which they can thrive.
“Early education and programmes are critical for cognitive, social and emotional growth and we must ensure early education is recognised for its vital role in preparing children for future success.”
The minister took part in several child-centric events between April 11 and April 17.
Ms Furbert promised that Happy Valley Child Care, the only Government-operated child care centre on the island, would continue to “uphold its commitment to high-quality childcare”.
She highlighted the work of the Office of Youth Affairs, which she explained offered youth engagement and community programmes.
She added that the ministry would continue to offer assistance through the Child Day Care Allowance Programme and Child and Family Services.
