Bermuda football exhibition a big hit
The official opening of the More Than A Game — From Bermuda’s Fields To The World exhibition proved to be a big hit among those gathered inside the Bermuda Society of Arts at City Hall yesterday.
The exhibition traces the evolution of Bermudian football and also celebrates local legends such as former professionals Clyde Best and Gary Darrell, who were also members of Bermuda’s famous team that won the silver medal at the 1967 Pan American Games.
Former West Ham striker Best is thrilled to see the island’s rich football legacy on display.
“I think this is something that is long overdue and it’s important that our people understand the history of our football and understand about those who came before us,” he said.
“So it’s nice to see a lot of the old pictures and information up there of players of yesterday.”
Former Washington Diplomats and Montreal Olympique midfielder Darrell was also blown away by exhibition.
“I think it’s very creative and very good,” he said.
“I think a lot of us locals wouldn’t know what some of us did as professional footballers or just footballers generally.
“And it includes everybody from the present day Nahki Wells to Clyde Best, Randy Horton, myself and all of these other players that have done well and represented our country at the highest level.”
Former Somerset Trojans goalkeeper Clyde “Tango” Burgess, who was also a member of Bermuda’s famous 1967 Pan Am Games team, was delighted to see the legacies of some of island’s most famous players being celebrated.
“Everyone of these players in this room here deserve it,” he said. “They’ve earned their spot here at this exhibition and it’s wonderful.
“I have enjoyed reading up on all these players and their accomplishments.
“This thing is long overdue and it’s wonderful.”
The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the premiere of the feature documentary Transforming the Beautiful Game — The Clyde Best Story.
A permanent iteration of the exhibition will be presented at the Diamonds International Building in Dockyard later this year.
