Durkins back on podium in new Cambridge Beaches race

Colette Durkin on top step of the podium

Maddie and Colette Durkin continued their recent dominance of the local road running scene after claiming female honours in their respective races in the inaugural Cambridge Classic 5/10K Challenge on Sunday.

Mother Maddie led the women’s field across the line in the 10K in 40min 32sec, while daughter Colette replicated the feat in the 5K in 22:25 respectively.

“The Cambridge races were super special,” Maddie told The Royal Gazette.

“They are a spectacular host and venue for the race. Great course, gorgeous setting and very generous prizes and raffles.

“The run was a good effort. Someone definitely turned up the heat this weekend, and I felt it for sure.”

Warwick Academy student Colette was also pleased with her performance in the inaugural event.

“Today was a good effort and I felt strong,” she said. “I had a stitch in my side going out, but fortunately it went away on the way back.”

It was the second straight victories for the pair after they claimed female honours in the 2026 RenaissanceRe 5/10 Mile Challenge seven days earlier, with Maddie winning the 10-mile race and Colette reigning supreme in the 5-mile race.

Stepanka Sprincova (41:41) was the second female home in the 10K and Teresa Ruiz (42:37) third to round off the podium finishers.

Lucy Sowerby (23:40) finished runner-up among the women’s field in the 5K with Leyla Crews (24:07) claiming the third and final spot on the podium.

Claiming overall 10K honours among the men was Tim Price (38:48), with Luke Hyland (40:05) taking second and Phillip Woollins (42:03) third.

Son of the soil Kwame Curling (20:03) led the entire field home in the 5K, followed by Jarred Jones (20:36) in second and Chefton Hall (21:17) in third.

Victory was especially sweet for Curling as he was competing in the parish in which he resides for the first time.

“Happy with the victory,” he said. “Was good to finally do a home race up the west.”

Marla Smith, the race director, was extremely pleased by the way the inaugural event panned out.

“It was a success,” she said.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy the new route, the weather turned out beautiful for it and it was quite scenic.

“We had several visitors join us for the race and it turned out to be a wonderful event.”

Smith, who is also secretary of race co-founders Swan’s Running Club, is now looking forward to next year’s event, which promises to be even bigger and better.

“Cambridge Beaches has committed to it again for next year and we are definitely going to be building on that,” she said.

“We’ve got quite a bit of interest from cruise ships, so we will try and include it as a destination event for tourists coming to the island also.”
