Nahki Wells scored his tenth goal of the season as Luton Town kept their hopes of clinching a spot in the promotion play-offs alive with a hard fought 2-1 win at home to Barnsley in League One on Saturday.

The Bermuda striker opened the scoring at Kenilworth Road from the penalty spot in the sixteenth minute after team-mate Hakeem Odoffin was brought down in the area but the away side levelled through Adam Phillips ten minutes later to leave the teams deadlocked at half time.

But with their chances of securing a top-six finish and a spot in the play-offs fast running out, Hatters midfielder Kasey Palmer grabbed a 79th minute winner to ensure that Luton’s late bid for the play-offs will go the last day of the season.

Luton are one point outside of the play-off positions and have no margin for error as they must win their final match away at third-placed Bolton while needing either Stevenage, Stockport or Wells’ former club Bradford City to lose if they are to extend their season.

Elsewhere in League One on Saturday, Bermudian goalkeeper Nathan Trott was an unused substitute in promoted Cardiff City’s 5-1 demolition at home to relegated Northampton Town.

Ollie Tanner, who scored twice, Joel Colwill, Callum Robinson and substitute Yousef Salech were on target for the Bluebirds, while Jake Evans scored a consolation goal for the visitors.

Cardiff clinched promotion to the Sky Bet Championship next season with a 3-1 win away to Reading on April 18, with Trott making a couple of fine saves between the posts.

Trott joined Cardiff on a season-long loan from Danish Superliga champions FC Copenhagen last August and it is understood that his deal includes an option to buy should the Bluebirds achieve promotion back to the Championship this season.

However, the 27-year-old’s future at the Welsh club appears uncertain after a leading Danish football magazine Tipsbladet reported that he has turned down offers to join Brian Barry-Murphy’s team permanently.
