Bermudian-based Australians and New Zealanders gathered at dawn in Hamilton to pay tribute to their countrymen who fought and died in battle.

The service for Anzac Day, held each April 25 to mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in 1915 during the First World War, was joined by dignitaries in front of the First World War memorial in Victoria Park at daybreak on Saturday.

Roughly 16,000 soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps were part of an allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula.

They landed on the shores at dawn 111 years ago, when they met resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders.

The memorial service is replicated each year throughout the world.
