Charity’s mammography units get international accreditation

The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has secured accreditation for both of its mammography units from a leading body.

A BCHC spokeswoman said that the Canadian Association of Radiologists’ Mammography Accreditation Programme had confirmed that the charity’s newer mammography unit has met its rigorous standards.

The CAR reaccredited the BCHC’s original mammography unit in 2025.

“For Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, this dual accreditation reflects not a single point in time, but a consistent and deliberate commitment to maintaining a high standard of care across the entire breast imaging pathway,” the spokeswoman said.

Paul Risk, a diagnostic imaging clinical director, radiologist and breast specialist at BCHC, said that the accreditation was validation of the care the charity provides its patients every day.

He added: “It means that every patient coming through our doors can be confident that their mammogram is being performed, interpreted and supported to the highest standards.”

Mammography remains the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer, with early detection improving outcomes, expanding treatment options and reducing the need for more intensive interventions.

The BCHC spokeswoman said: “At Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, this is supported by a co-ordinated breast care pathway.

“Should an abnormality be identified, follow-on imaging and biopsy procedures can be arranged within days, with specialist consultation available on the island.

“Importantly, access to this level of care is not determined by a patient’s ability to pay. Through the centre’s equal access fund, supported by corporate and community donations, breast services are provided with no copay, ensuring that anyone who needs screening or diagnostic imaging can access it.”
