Back in the habit: Sister Act auditions kick off soon

High energy: the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda will hold auditions from May 14 to 17 for roles in a presentation of Sister Act The Musical

Performers have been invited by the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda to help bring Sister Act The Musical to City Hall in October.

The theatre group will host auditions for the show from May 14 to 17 and seeks strong singers, actors and dancers over the age of 15 to show off their skills.

Katrina Kawaley-Lathan, the G&S president, said: “This is more than just a show — it’s a chance to step out of your everyday routine, try something new and be part of a welcoming, creative community.”

The Tony Award-winning show, based on the popular 1992 film, tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who takes refuge from the mob in a convent after witnessing a murder and is forced to pretend to be a nun.

The musical comedy was praised for its uplifting story and music, penned by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menkin.

A G&S spokeswoman said that the auditions offer an opportunity for residents to take part in “one of the most joyful and high-energy musicals to hit the stage”.

She added: “Whether you’re a seasoned performer or completely new to theatre, all are encouraged to come along and give it a try.

“Participants will have the unique chance to work alongside an international professional creative team travelling to Bermuda specifically for this production.

“These industry experts bring experience from across the globe including London’s West End, offering invaluable insight and a truly world-class theatre experience right here on the island.

“The production features a wide range of roles suitable for all ages and genders, with opportunities for strong singers, dancers and actors alike.”

Real-world performance skills: Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda will hold a series of drama workshops between May 9 and 13 at the Bermuda School of Music, in the FS Furbert Building, The Berkeley Cultural Centre, 23 Berkeley Road

The G&S also announced that it will host a series of drama workshops designed to help local performers develop skills and boost confidence.

The sessions, scheduled to take place between May 9 and 13, will be led by Jamie Wilkin, a seasoned West End performer, screen actor and director based in Los Angeles.

They will include a musical theatre workshop, a children’s workshop, a screen acting workshop, an adult acting workshop and auditioning guidance.

The spokeswoman said: “Each workshop focuses on real-world performance skills, from building characters and confidence to mastering audition techniques.

“Participants can join individual sessions or experience multiple workshops across the week.”

The spokeswoman said spaces are limited so anyone interested was urged to sign up early, while discounts will be available to G&S members and those who book multiple workshops.
