Three women were honoured for their contributions to foster care during an annual appreciation tea.

They were recognised during DCFS’s appreciation tea for foster parents, which celebrates the efforts of those who create support systems for vulnerable children.

Ms Jackson received the Therapeutic Foster Parent Award, Ms Edwards was given the Advocacy Award and Ms Simons collected the Kinship Care Award for her dedication in raising her granddaughter.

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, told attendees: “Foster parents continue to provide love, stability and guidance to children who need it most.

“Their commitment strengthens our communities and we encourage more people to step forward and become part of this vital support system.

“Raising children truly takes a village.”

The tea was held on May 3 as part of the department’s observation of Foster Care Month.

It featured a keynote address from Kahnae Bean called From Sunshine League to Cabinet, in which she spoke on her time in foster care and underscored the importance of supportive foster parents, social workers and advocates.
