Tourists and locals alike can take the plunge from more than 10,000 feet above Bermuda through the island’s first skydiving venture.

A spokeswoman for Skydive Bermuda said the company carried out the first test dives last week and hopes to take guests to new heights by next year — once relevant permits are secured.

She added: “Four jumpers, including Skydive Bermuda co-founders Spencer Butterfield and Christopher Oates, successfully made a number of jumps from a helicopter from Cross Island at Dockyard, which is the hoped-for permanent drop zone for the endeavour.

“Both solo and tandem dives were made from 13,000 feet above the island, giving the skydivers a spectacular view of the entirety of Bermuda and its surrounding reefs.”

Test dives were done aboard Paradise Aviation, the holding company of US-based Azura helicopters, which is also expected to launch tours in Bermuda next year.

Mr Butterfield said: “We are so thrilled to share the news about Skydive Bermuda. We think it’s going to be an incredibly exciting addition to Bermuda’s tourism offering as well as something really fun for thrill seekers locally.”

He added: “The view of Bermuda from 13,000 feet is something that has to be seen to be believed — we always suspected we lived in the most beautiful place on the planet; now we know for sure.”

Mr Oates has skydived thousands of times, but believes the ones over Bermuda were the most visually stunning.

He explained: “We have something truly special here and we are so excited to share this unique perspective with the adventurous community soon.”

The co-owners thanked the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority, Skyport, Bermuda Land Management Corporation and the Bermuda Airport Authority for their support as the company works towards its launch.
