New weather platform promises Bermuda-focused forecast
A new Bermuda-focused weather platform has been launched, with its developers hoping it will help residents and visitors plan their days.
Wopnin, available online at wopnin.fyi, was created by Bermudian-based technology company dotbm with a range of features to help users understand not only weather conditions but their wider impact on life on the island.
Chris Bennett, of dotbm, said: “Bermuda deserved something built for how we actually live here. Wopnin was built on the rock, for the rock.
“It takes the information people need every day and presents it in a way that is easier to read, easier to understand and more useful in real life.”
Wopnin includes present weather conditions, hourly and daily forecasts, life alerts, marine conditions, tide schedules, fishing reports, aviation weather and historical data.
The platform also includes IsleCast, a multi-source consensus engine designed to pull together data from multiple weather resources to show where forecasts agree and disagree.
Mr Bennett said he was motivated to create the platform because he became frustrated with needing to cross-verify different apps to get a “semi-accurate view” of what conditions on the island would be.
He said: “Every global weather app treats Bermuda like open ocean. Wopnin is the first platform that actually understands the island with 27 weather sources, fused together, verified against what’s actually happening at the airport, and translated into plain language that helps you decide what to do with your day.”
The platform also includes a transit section designed to offer users a look at bus and ferry disruptions, cancellations, next departures, nearest stops, fares and live service status.
A dotbm spokeswoman said: “For residents and visitors alike, that means fewer surprises and better planning before heading out the door.
“Wopnin also includes dedicated tools for Bermuda's marine and fishing communities — reef conditions, small-craft warnings, wave forecasts, tide timing, water temperature and fishing windows.
“For tourists, the platform offers an easy way to understand Bermuda's weather, water, beaches and transport conditions without searching across multiple sources.”
Mr Bennett added: “People in Bermuda are loyal to what they know, and we respect that. Wopnin is here to earn its place by being useful every day.
“It is local, practical and built with Bermuda in mind from the beginning.”
