Government starts collecting data for 2026 census

Long-term planning: the 2026 Bermuda Census of Population and Housing began on May 21, 2026 and will run until March 31, 2027, with a goal of creating a “comprehensive snapshot” of the population on May 20, 2026

The 2026 Census of Population and Housing has officially begun with Bermuda residents urged to do their part to ensure it captures an accurate picture of the island.

The census, held every ten years, will run until March 31, 2027, with the goal of creating a “comprehensive snapshot” of the island as of May 20.

Bermuda’s last census was conducted in 2016, when the island’s population was just below 64,000.

In addition to questions about age, religion, immigration, marital status, education, economic activity, household members and health, this census will include new questions about language, living arrangements and household characteristics.

Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, urged all residents to take part and make their voices count.

Mr Hayward said: “Bermuda’s census is one of the most important national exercises we undertake because it helps us understand who we are as an island and what our people need to thrive.

“This year’s theme, ‘Fill the Gap,’ reflects the importance of closing the gap between assumptions and evidence and ensuring that decisions affecting Bermuda are based on accurate and reliable information.”

Census data is used to help long-term planning and policy development, identifying demographic trends, workforce changes, migration patterns and changes in housing needs.

Participation in the census is mandatory, with residents asked to complete the census based on where they usually live and sleep as of Census Day, May 20, 2026.

Information collected through the census is confidential with individual responses not shared publicly.

One person may complete the census on behalf of an entire household and should include everyone who usually lives in the home, including babies and household members temporarily overseas, admitted to hospital or away for study or holiday.

Residents can complete the census online at census.gov.bm. Anyone who has note received an instruction letter is urged to contact the Department of Statistics promptly.

Participation options also include telephone interviews and in-person assistance, with computers are available at the Department of Statistics for members of the public who may not have internet access at home and field interviewers available to help seniors and others requiring additional support.

Mr Hayward added: “Every household, every family and every individual counts.

“By participating, residents help create a clearer and more accurate picture of Bermuda, one that will guide important decisions for years to come.”
