Bermudian performer featured on Kelly Clarkson Show
Bermudian Broadway star Nicholas Christopher was featured on the Kelly Clarkson Show after his recent Tony nomination.
Mr Christopher, who has earned several award nominations for his portrayal of chess grandmaster Anatoly Sergievsky in the musical Chess, recalled learning of his nomination alongside his family.
He said: “I wanted to do the whole thing like ‘I don’t even care, I was asleep’, but nah.
“I was up at 4am because I couldn’t sleep and I went to the gym and I was face timing my family and I have my little girls on either side of me, me and my wife, and I was just hoping and praying.
“Not only was it the first category called out but I was the first name called and then we screamed.”
Mr Christopher said that the nomination came during a particularly exciting time for his family, noting his father Ed Christopher’s involvement in the recent Royal Visit.
He told Ms Clarkson: “King Charles III went to Bermuda, which is where I am from, and my dad is a town crier there, which is now an official position in Bermuda because of him, and so he got to announce King Charles’s presence and he got to meet him.
“It was just a crazy week for my dad, and my sister is also expecting a baby any minute.”
While it was recently announced that curtains would close on Chess on June 21, months earlier than previously expected, Mr Christopher said he was having a “really good time” with the show.
He said: “It’s the right mix between politics and humour and screaming at the top of your lungs.”
Mr Christopher also noted that Broadway was not always his goal, confessing that as a child he had a very different career in mind.
He said: “I didn’t have a lot of friends growing up, so I would sit at home and watch movies. I wanted to be Indiana Jones.”
Mr Christopher added: “Then you realise archaeology isn’t shooting guns and snapping whips.”
During the interview, the audience was also shown a clip of Mr Christopher performing in the show, belting out a showstopping 20-second sustained note, which Ms Clarkson described as “insane”.
He said: “I didn’t know I was going to do that until we got in front of an audience and we ran a show.”
Chess is scheduled to remain at the Imperial Theatre in New York until June 21 with tickets available to purchase online, while the 79th Annual Tony Awards will be held on June 7.
