The Bermuda Housing Corporation has stepped in to help the single mother who is being evicted by former Progressive Labour Party MP Delaey Robinson.

And yesterday Mr. Robinson was able to get his property properly listed as a tourist unit, which gave him the right to evict Salina Trott. A bureaucratic oversight meant that, until yesterday, the property was listed as a residential unit.

Police were called to the Old Maid?s Lane, St. George?s property on Tuesday after Mr. Robinson tried to forcibly evict single mother Salina Trott and her mother.

Last night Mr. Robinson confirmed that the property was now listed at the Planning Department as a tourist unit.

?This is the situation and she has no protection,? said Mr. Robinson, who added that Ms Trott should get emergency housing because it was a dire emergency.

?I have no complaints about her as a guest, she is not a tenant. But we are a hotel and we can?t afford charity of this kind. It shouldn?t be too difficult for two women to find a place. We haven?t led her down the garden path to think that she was there forever.?

Mr. Robinson said he was going to change the family apartment into a smaller unit.

?The property is being redeveloped,? said Mr. Robinson, ?We are getting out of catering to families in that way.?

Rent commissioner Eugene Foley said he received a letter from the Department of Planning which confirmed that the property on Old Maid?s Lane, was granted a change of use from a residential unit to tourist accommodation in 2000.

?Based on the land valuation list, it had it as residential, but it was not changed when it was granted a change of use,? said Mr. Foley.

?The appropriate authorities were not notified and it was not amended on the evaluation list to show the proper classification.

?So she is not a tenant, but a guest and she absolutely has no protection or rights to remain on the property.

?It is an unfortunate situation because she seems to be very sincere, she has kids and she is paying her rent.

?She is not a bad person, it is just that she is in a difficult situation and there are many good people having to face similar situations.

?I suggested to her to go to the BHC as she has an urgent situation, as he can demand his accommodation back immediately.?

Ms Trott who lives with her almost completely blind mother, was paying $2,500 a month rent for the apartment.

Yesterday she said: ?Mr. Foley called me earlier and told me that the apartment was a tourist unit.

?But I still insist that when I moved from a room in Aunt Nea?s Inn into the apartment, I was told that it would be a long term rental and I would not be tossed out as soon as the tourist season began.

?I have a meeting with Renee Brown at the BHC tomorrow (today) and hopefully we can get some sort of accommodation.

?I know how they feel. They have to pay for their house ? it?s just that I thought I was going to have the place for longer.

?Right now it is cool, but I don?t know for how long.?

When asked for confirmation on the property, Department of Tourism employee Carlos Durham said: ?We have no comment.

?I am not at liberty to talk to you. You have to speak to Mr. Delaey Robinson yourself.?

And Police media spokesman Dwayne Caines said he would not comment on Tuesday?s disturbance.
