Bermuda cruised to an impressive 4-0 win over Belize in an entertaining women’s international friendly at Flora Duffy Stadium last night.

Keunna Dill led the charge with two goals for the Lady Gombey Warriors, while Kenni Thompson and substitute Evans Welch also got on the scoresheet.

Interim Bermuda head coach Karl Roberts, taking control of his first game after the departure of Naquita Robinson, was pleased with his team’s dominant performance.

“The girls did well,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“We gave the girls some minutes and got eight substitutes on. We got the opportunity to see some of them in action and they showed a good account of themselves.

“There is still room for improvement, of course, there’s always room for improvement but we just have to continue what Coach Naquita did and just move it forward.”

Roberts is also happy to have got a first win under his belt at the helm of the team.

“It was good but applause to the players,” he said.

They are coachable, want to do well, and it’s a pleasure to have players like that. From their energy and them wanting to do well for each other, it’s just a matter of nurturing and guiding them.”

Belize took the match to their hosts and applied early pressure from the opening whistle.

Bermuda goalkeeper Micah Pond was forced to rush off her line to make a crucial block in a one-on-one with Belize forward Jaya Brown and the away side threatened again when Alisha Terry’s 40-yard free kick clipped the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.

Belize’s Shamika Lambey then had a free kick from outside of the box parried away by Pond before the ball was eventually cleared to safety following a frantic goalmouth scramble.

The game was turned on its head when the Lady Gombey Warriors took the lead against the run of play in the seventeenth minute. Thompson’s low shot struck the post and striker Dill reacted first to the loose ball to slot into an empty net.

Despite falling behind, Belize kept pressing and went close again when Terry’s 25-yard blast struck the bar but it was Bermuda who struck next.

Thompson broke away down the left flank in the 43rd minute and delivered an inviting cross, which Dill bundled home from point-blank range for her second goal and Thompson’s second assist of the night.

Still Belize pressed on and nearly pulled one back when Pond went full stretch to parry a shot against the post before the ball was cleared away on the stroke of half-time.

Thompson went from provider to scorer when she curled an inswinging corner in at the back post to extend Bermuda’s lead two minutes after the restart.

The former Bournemouth player then went close to grabbing a second when her shot from outside of the box flew just wide, while at the other end Brown brought another save from Pond.

Roberts rung the changes after left back Danni Watson suffered a knock and had to be replaced, making triple substitutions in the 62nd and 75th minutes and a double in the 84th.

Belize went close again when Iamara Baptist hit the woodwork from outside of the area and Pond did well to deny Brown’s effort from the rebound.

Welch, who came off the bench in the first wave of substitutions, then rounded off the scoring in second half stoppage time when she drilled a shot from outside of the box into the roof of the net.

Belize went close to grabbing a late consolation when Baptist struck the woodwork for the second time of the match right on the full-time whistle to preserve Pond’s clean sheet.

Bermuda and Belize will renew their rivalry in another friendly at Flora Duffy Stadium on Sunday at 7pm.
