A fire broke out in the Bermuda Government-run Sally Port Dump, in Dockyard, Ireland Island North, sending a column of black smoke visible for miles along the length of the northern shore.

A spokesman for the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service said the blaze was reported shortly after 7.30pm and eight firefighters on two trucks worked to quell the flames, which were extinguished in about an hour.

There were no reported injuries, but a floating dock and dump items were damaged in the incident.

The final fire truck left Sally Port at about 10pm and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
