Departure from values of modesty leads to moral decay
Throughout human history, the Abrahamic faiths have consistently emphasised modesty, dignity, and moral conduct. While societies have changed dramatically over the centuries, one principle has remained remarkably constant: the call to guard one's modesty and avoid lewdness.
Islam places particular emphasis on this virtue, seeing modesty not as oppression but as a protection of personal dignity, social harmony, and spiritual wellbeing.
The Koran commands both men and women to observe modesty. Allah says: “Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them …” (24:30)
Immediately following this instruction, believing women are also commanded to lower their gaze, guard their modesty, and dress modestly (24:31). The emphasis is therefore placed upon both genders, beginning with personal responsibility and self-restraint.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) elevated modesty to a central characteristic of faith. He said: “Modesty is part of faith.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
In another narration, he stated: “Every religion has a distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is modesty.” (Ibn Majah)
Islam does not merely discourage indecent dress; it seeks to cultivate purity in thought, speech, behaviour, and appearance. Lewdness is viewed as something that gradually erodes the moral fabric of society.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against shamelessness, teaching that when people lose their sense of modesty, they become capable of almost any wrongdoing.
This concern for modesty is not unique to Islam. The Bible also contains numerous teachings promoting modest dress and conduct. In 1 Timothy 2:9, women are encouraged to dress “modestly and with propriety”. Similarly, 1 Peter 3:3-4 emphasises inner beauty and humility over outward display.
One striking example recognised by both Muslims and Christians, is Mary (Miriam), the mother of Jesus (Isa, peace be upon him). Across centuries of religious art, scripture, and tradition, Mary is consistently depicted as a woman of modesty, humility, and devotion.
Whether in Christian iconography, Islamic literature, or historical representations, her dress is characteristically loose, covering her body and hair. While cultures have differed, Mary's modest appearance has remained one of the most universally respected symbols of feminine dignity and piety.
In an age where public standards of dress and behaviour are increasingly debated, Islam's teachings on modesty offer a reminder that true honour lies not in attracting attention but in cultivating character.
Modesty is not merely a style of clothing; it is a state of heart that reflects self-respect, humility before God, and consideration for others. It is a timeless value shared by the prophets and upheld throughout the Abrahamic tradition.
In my view, some of what was displayed during National Heroes Day represents a departure from the values of modesty, dignity, and self-respect that have traditionally been upheld within our community, especially in honouring our National Heroes.
What I witnessed reflects what I would describe as the unfortunate offspring of a culture that increasingly celebrates exhibitionism over restraint. While others may see such displays as expressions of personal freedom, I believe they signal a broader shift away from the moral standards that generations before us sought to preserve.
As we reflect on the examples we set through our words, conduct, and public celebrations, we must be mindful of what we wish to pass on to future generations. Every society teaches its children what to admire, what to normalise, and what to aspire to become. The values we promote today will shape the character of the communities we inherit tomorrow.
There is a saying often attributed in various forms to historians and moral philosophers: “The demise of a nation begins with its moral decay.” While nations may possess wealth, power, and influence, history repeatedly shows that when moral foundations are weakened, social decline often follows.
The great challenge of every generation is not merely to achieve material success, but to preserve the virtues that sustain a just, dignified, and compassionate society.
Whether viewed through the lens of Islam or Christianity, modesty remains more than a matter of dress; it is a reflection of humility, self-respect, and reverence for God.
As we move forward, may we carefully consider not only the legacy we have inherited, but also the legacy we are leaving behind.
As salaam alaikum (peace be unto you).
