A police officer who helped to save the life of a stabbing victim was commended for his actions by the Bermuda Police Service.

The BPS said Pc Julian Brassington was among the officers who responded to a reported stabbing on the afternoon of May 31 in Hamilton.

A spokesman added: “Upon arrival, they discovered two male victims suffering from stab wounds, on the sidewalk opposite the Number 1 car park on Front Street.

“Recognising the injuries sustained by one of the victims to be life threatening, Pc Brassington immediately rendered emergency assistance, transferring his body weight to apply direct, constant pressure to the wound, even as the victim was being moved.

“Pc Brassington remained on the gurney with the victim while he was conveyed by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, ensuring the wound remained compressed and blood loss was minimised.

“It was noted that, given the severity of the wound, Pc Brassington’s immediate and sustained intervention to prevent further blood loss ultimately saved the man's life.”

Na’imah Astwood, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, praised Pc Brassington for his actions, stating: “His quick thinking, composure under pressure, and dedication to preserving life exemplify the commitment our officers have to the safety and wellbeing of the Bermuda community.”

The spokesman said an investigation into the incident remained under way.
