Brandon DeSilva and Blake Burgess warmed up for the upcoming Rubis Around the Island Race in the best possible way after securing class honours at Ferry Reach on Sunday.

The pair conquered choppy seas on the North Shore to lead the A-class across the line in their 19ft Ocke Mannerfelt boat.

“It was a good race,” driver DeSilva told The Royal Gazette.

“We made some adjustments for Around the Island Race and were able to to test them out in the choppy conditions and give the boat a good shakedown. Looking forward to Round the Island Race.

“I give my co-pilot Blake Burgess credit for the win. He was working the ballast tank and getting the boat sitting just right in the rough water.”

DeSilva and Burgess claimed class honours in last year’s Rubis Around the Island Race and were also the third boat to finish the 53-nautical mile circumnavigation of the island.

Finishing runner-up behind the pair at Ferry Reach on Sunday was the team of Jacari Marshall and Marcus Pimental, followed by Chris Marshall and Santiago Roe in third.

Siblings David and Geoffrey Willoughby claimed B-class honours after sole rivals Jody Carreiro and father/co-pilot Tony broke down with mechanical problems.

There was no winner in the C-class as the teams of Chad Sutherland and Lee Wilson and sole rivals Philip Paiva and Cameron White broke down due to mechanical issues.

Bobby DeCosta and Josh Holders was the only team represented in the D-class.

Only one of two 25-minute offshore races was held as the race committee cancelled the second due to high winds.

Jacon Garrett had a day to remember after winning three of the six inshore junior races contested in the GT15 class.

Amouri Hollis also had plenty to be proud of with two wins while Xoryn Woods had one.

Sunday’s race day was the first since driver Rickai “Pugi” Raynor tragically lost his life in a fatal crash during Bermuda Power Boat Association’s Hamilton Harbour Race series on June 28.

The prestigious Rubis Around the Island Race will be on held August 9.
