A man who brought illegal drugs into Bermuda was given a suspended prison sentence in Magistrates’ Court.

Tahva Virgil, 32, admitted importing cannabis resin and another substance containing THC during an earlier appearance in Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced for the offences yesterday.

Virgil, from Southampton, initially denied the charges when he first appeared in court in 2023.

The court heard yesterday that customs officers noticed “foreign objects” when they scanned Virgil’s luggage at LF Wade International Airport in February 2022.

Officers discovered drugs within heat-sealed packages in Virgil’s bag.

The Crown dropped allegations that Virgil intended to supply the items, a charge that he also had denied.

Prosecutor Matthew Frick requested that Virgil serve two years in jail, suspended for two years, with a condition that he comply with his existing mental health order.

Susan Mulligan, for Virgil, suggested that her client was “pressured and used” in the incident and that his life has been hard since then.

Magistrate Craig Attridge sentenced Virgil to 18 months behind bars for importing the cannabis resin, to run concurrently with a year in jail for bringing in the other substance, and suspended both sentences for two years.
