Not since the Bermuda Fashion Festival and Fashion Collective have smaller-scale clothing designers been afforded an opportunity to display their collections in front of a larger audience.

On Saturday night, the Big Picnic, an outdoor event to celebrate Bermudian culture, creativity, music, fashion and food, will allow them to do exactly that.

Four designers will display five collections at Barr’s Bay Park, while a line-up of male and female models will showcase the one-of-a-kind pieces of summer resort wear.

Designs will feature an array of colours, alongside unconventional and plus-size pieces.

James Lee has taken a lead in organising the event’s fashion side.

The make-up artist launched his clothing brand, Xoetiqu, in 2012. On Saturday, he will unveil his Beaches and Breezers unconventional swimwear collection — beer-cap swimsuits.

Explaining the aims of the Big Picnic, Mr Lee said: “The event is to bring the community back together and bring something new, but it will also focus on Bermudian artists, fashion, culture, history and stuff like that.

“There’s not been many fashion shows in a while. Recently there’s been a few pop-ups, but it will be nice to see a bigger showcase of local designers as opposed to retailers.

“There’s nowhere for the artists and designers to showcase their stuff any more.”

He added: “It would be wonderful to have it as an annual event. I don’t think we would do it at the same time and same place every year.

“It’s a nice, real big collaborative event. There’s a lot of people involved putting it together and making sure there’s stuff from every angle.”

Also at the showcase will be Desirée Riley, showcasing her brand, D’ezir and Velvet Dusk resort wear collection.

She said: “I’m very excited. I have not done a fashion show in years — I think my last one was back in 2018.

“I think Bermuda needs this. It’s a great event for everyone to come out and have a good time. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

Seamstress Monique Stevens is looking forward to unveiling her Rose in Bloom ready-to-wear collection.

She hopes attendees will appreciate the time and skill that go into making each piece.

Ms Stevens, who has been running IeShun S for 14 years, said: “Fast fashion has bombarded us, I would say.”

She added: “I have a love and interest for wanting to see the trade grow.”

“Bermuda has been needing another fashion-show-type event for a while. We have a lot of local talent, so I’m excited,” Chaela Lunar said.

She will be displaying her plus-size Fae and Fauna collection from her brand, Lunar Soul, as well as jewellery and art pieces.

Ms Lunar added: “These events are good for the designers that are not in the retail stores.”
