The Minister of Economy and Labour sat down with young summer employees last week to discuss the future of Bermuda’s workforce.

Future Forward: A Conversation with the Minister gave members of the Government’s College Summer Employment Programme a chance to talk to Jason Hayward during a forum at Bermuda College.

Mr Hayward said the young workers deserved a say in the future of Bermuda’s labour market and to have their thoughts heard.

He explained: “Our young people must have a meaningful voice in the decisions that will shape their future.

“Their ideas, experiences and ambitions provide valuable insight as we continue developing programmes and policies that prepare Bermudians for the workforce of tomorrow.”

The meeting was held under the theme “Your voice matters. Your ideas matter. Your future matters”.

Callahj Simons, a youth advocate and former president of the Bermuda College Student Government, posed opening questions before opening the floor to attendees.

They asked questions regarding employment and educational opportunities, entrepreneurship and affordable housing, as well as artificial intelligence and the cost of living.

Mr Hayward encouraged students to further discuss their aspirations, challenges they faced while preparing for employment and what would convince them to stay on the island.

A spokesman for the Department of Workforce Development said the department would review feedback to inform youth training and career development initiatives.
