The family who play together, ultimately win together.

This was certainly the case for siblings Keegan and Logan Jones and cousin Shane Robinson, who combined their efforts to guide holders St George’s to a convincing six-wicket victory against Somerset in an entertaining Colts Cup Match at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

Captain Keegan Jones was virtually unplayable as he triggered a massive collapse that saw Somerset lose nine wickets for 41 runs in 14 overs as he recorded brilliant figures of eight for 38 to demonstrate why he was chosen as a colt in the St George’s Cup Match team this year.

Logan Jones (79) and Robinson (50) thumped half-centuries and shared in a vital 98-run partnership that carried the holders to the brink of victory before being dislodged in the space of 11 balls.

Having earlier done the damage with the ball, it was perhaps only fitting for Keegan to score the winning run and spark St George’s celebrations.

“At the start, it didn’t go to how we planned, he told The Royal Gazette.

“But after the first water break we pushed, we worked together and we got the outcome that we wanted.”

After a delayed start to the match because of rain, openers Callum MacFarlane (63) and Patrick Dill (41) added 97 runs to get Somerset off to a solid start after they were sent in to bat, with the former entertaining the crowd with some exquisite stroke play.

Varying his line and length with lethal effect and aided by a turning track, off spinner Keegan finally made the breakthrough when he bowled Dill playing back to a fuller ball.

He then struck again four overs later when he bowled Somerset counterpart Ajani Lee (1), who was pushing forward, to leave the challengers poised at 110 for four at lunch.

The 19-year-old quickly picked up where he left off when play resumed, trapping Callum McIntosh (1) in front before having MacFarlane caught by Aaron Paynter at mid-wicket and bowling Dionte Dowling (0) in quick succession to place St George’s firmly in the driver’s seat.

Amari Davis (6) became his sixth victim after being grabbed by Sa-Qui Robinson at mid-on before he bowled Nyrico Swan (3) and had last man Darrien Gibbons (16), the only other Somerset batter in double figures, well caught by Paynter at wide mid-on to bring the curtains down on the hosts’ innings.

“Once I got in my groove I just kept going,” Keegan said. “I was getting a lot of turn out there and that definitely helped out a lot.”

Keyan Webb (one for 25) and a run-out accounted for the other wickets.

Set a target of 140, St George’s survived an early scare when Logan was caught at mid-wicket off a no-ball.

He and fellow opener Devontae Binns (1) moved the score to 33 before the latter was caught by Gibbons at mid-off from the bowling of McIntosh, who struck again in his next over when he had Enrique Minks (0) caught by Tai Cariah at mid-wicket before another shower halted play.

Logan and Robinson put Somerset’s attack to the sword when play resumed with some delightful stroke play all around the ground to keep the scorers busy.

Logan’s luck continued as he was dropped in the forties before smashing Gibbons to the mid-wicket boundary for four to reach his fifty off 68 balls.

Robinson then guided Fletcher Logie down to third man and crossed for a single to bring up his fifty off 59 balls.

With just nine runs needed for victory, the third-wicket partnership was finally broken when Robinson took a wild swing and had his centre stump pushed back by a beautiful Davis ball.

Logan departed the next over after holing out to McIntosh on the deep mid-wicket boundary before sibling Keegan sealed the deal.

“I wanted to go the whole way, but I had a great time out there and feel good, and that’s all I can hope for,” Logan said.

Robinson was delighted to partner his cousin in the middle.

“I haven’t been able to bat with my cousin for a very long time, so being out there with him again brought back a lot of memories and it was a great feeling,” he said.

McIntosh was the pick of the Somerset bowling with two for 47.
