Swimmer Emma Harvey qualified for the 50 metres backstroke semi-final after a solid performance in her heat at the Commonwealth Games this morning.

Harvey, who has been battling the effects of illness, was fifth in her heat, in 29.20sec. As the fourteenth fastest from six heats, she secured a slot in this evening’s semis, which take place at 4.28pm Bermuda time.

The fastest qualifier from the heats was Canada’s Kylie Masse , a five-times Olympic medal winner, in 27.79.

Harvey also reached the semis of the 50m and 100m butterfly, on Friday and Sunday respectively, but withdrew from Saturday’s 100m backstroke heats due to illness.

She is still feeling the effects of that illness.

“I was feeling a little bit better [on Sunday] and kind of hoping that I'd keep getting healthier,” she said. “But yesterday was definitely tough. Dealing with sickness and stuff has been really tough. Obviously this is not the meet that I'd hoped for.”

In this morning’s 50m backstroke heat at Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre she was almost a second slower than she was three weeks ago.

Once she fulfils her races at the Games, Harvey has a few weeks to rebuild her strength before competing in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in California next month.

“Hopefully I'll be healthy by then, fully recovered,” she said.
