Jah-Nhai Perinchief leaps into Commonwealth Games final
Blustery winds made things tricky for Jah-Nhai Perinchief at the Commonwealth Games, but he overcame the conditions today to qualify for the triple jump final.
At the same time, Bermuda’s Caitlyn Bobb raced in the women’s 400m where she was seventh in her semi-final in 55.17sec, missing out on the final.
In a three-jump qualifying round, Perinchief required only two attempts to secure a place in the final on Saturday morning.
After a yearlong absence from the sport, he chalked up a season-best of 16.01 metres at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow to finish seventh from a field of 14. The top 12 progressed to the final.
His first attempt went awry as a gust of wind unbalanced him in the final phase of the jump, causing him to land short and somersault into the sandpit to save the jump, which was measured at 14.33m.
“It's tricky out there because the wind would start to die down, but then it would blow on the run,” he said. “That sets you up to be tight, especially with my build. I'm a vertical-base jumper, so if I’m tight it’s going to send me out.
“I tried to save it because it would’ve let me out for a big jump, but that's hard to do. There was a little bit of over-rotation.”
Both his jumps were recorded with a 2.8m/sec tailwind.
“Even the second one, I was still a little too tight. I just cut my stride to make it in and saved it,” he said.
Having secured qualification with his second jump, Perinchief, who won the bronze medal in the event at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, passed on his third jump and was pleased with his performance.
“This is actually my first major competition this season,” he said. “I had an injury last year, so I haven't jumped since last June. I figured with the competition I could probably get in the final with 16 metres. I didn’t want to waste too many attempts early and just saved it for the final.”
Looking ahead to the final, he said: “I like to compete, so I'm going to always go out and give it my best, give or take what my body allows. [Brian] Wellman's done a very good job managing me with the injury this season.
“The goal is to try to bring another medal home for Bermuda and hopefully a gold. I have the potential to do so. I just got to execute and put one on the board and I think I can make it happen.”
The longest qualifying jump was achieved by Jamaica’s Jordan Scott with 16.56.
Caitlyn Bobb completed her Commonwealth Games in the women’s 400m semi-finals.
Her seventh place in the first of two semis meant she did not progress. Drawn on the inside lane she quickly reeled in the runner in lane two, Uganda’s Maureen Akilki Banura, in the back straight as they battled a headwind but she was unable to make any further impact on the field.
“It was really windy. Lane one is really tight, so you need to get out and establish yourself in the race,” she said.
“But it’s not a bad way to end my season. It’s a big achievement. I just wish I was a little bit further ahead in my season, like last year. But hey, we all have tough seasons.”
This is Bobb’s second Commonwealth Games and she said she’d enjoyed her time in Scotland.
Her semi-final was won by Yemi Mary John, of England, in 51.18, while the fastest from the two semis was Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley in 51.18.
Bermuda’s Tiara DeRosa will compete in the women’s discus final this evening (4.40pm Bermuda time).
