Somerset bowl St George’s out twice in day to win Cup Match

Cup Ma ch day 1

Champions Somerset bowled St George’s out twice in a day to claim a fantastic Cup Match victory on home soil.

A fine batting performance on the opening day of the Annual Classic had taken the pressure off the holders in terms of losing their crown, which gave them a free shot at St George’s on day two.

After finishing their innings on 391 in the first hour of play on the second day, Somerset sent St George’s into a spin, with Dion Stovell and Derrick Brangman pivotal in the victory.

Only opener Jonte Smith provided any resistance in the first St George’s innings, making 41 before he became one of Stovell’s victims. Stovell ended up taking four for 31 and Brangman four for 22 as St George’s were skittled out for 113, with only Delray Rawlins (20) and captain Sinclair Smith (10) making double figures.

Following on, St George’s changed up their order with Onias Bascome partnering Nzari Paynter at the top of their second innings. Bascome made just 12 and it was left to teenager Isaiah O’Brien, in at No 3, who did his best to salvage a draw.

O’Brien made a fantastic 64 to give St George’s supporters some cause for celebration but after he was bowled by Kamau Leverock wickets fell with regularity.

Delray Rawlins, Macai Simmons, Luke Horan, Sinclair Smith and Kevon Fubler all failed to make double figures, with only a tenth-wicket partnership of 39 between Jonte Smith and Zeko Burgess delaying the inevitable.

St George’s were bowled out second time around for 188, falling to defeat by an innings and 90 runs.
