Swimmer Teagan Mewett has expressed her thrill at breaking one of Bermuda’s longstanding records.

Mewett set a new mark in the 200 metres breaststroke of 2min 37.67sec, shattering the previous best of 2:42.25 set by Jenny Smatt in 1992.

The teenager posted her time at the 2026 Futures Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, and revealed her delight at breaking the national record exclusively to The Royal Gazette.

“It’s an honour to break such a long standing record, especially because Jenny was one of my dad’s [Geri Mewett] Olympic team-mates,” she said. “It’s really exciting to see all of the work I’ve put in pay off.”

Mewett won three medals, including gold as part of the women’s medley relay team, at the Carifta Games this year and will later represent Bermuda again in the Junior Pan Pacific Championships later this month.

“I have had a great summer of training and am really looking forward to representing Bermuda at Junior Pan Pacifics in Vancouver in a few weeks,” she said.

“This swim sets me up well coming into the meet and I’m excited to see what I can do.”
