A Bermudian photographer and visual storyteller has been offered a grant for an artistic project.

Nicola Muirhead’s Descendants of Summer was approved for funding by the Caribbean Culture Fund as one of 21 new works supported by the fund.

The projects, chosen from eight countries across the Caribbean community, were part of a grant and residency scheme supported by the CCF.

Kellie Magnus, the fund’s executive director, said: “Collectively, the grantees are showing the power of art in its many dimensions.”

Support for Ms Muirhead, a former photographer with The Royal Gazette, was part of the CCF’s fourth call, which took the theme “Art for Change and Caribbean Collaboration”.

The projects involve film, theatre, photography, multimedia, architecture and even digital heritage, libraries and archives.

Works were chosen by an independent jury based on the their closeness to the fund’s theme, as well as the skill of the artists and the quality and feasibility of their projects.

Included in the other awards made in call 4 were a documentary on Afro-Caribbean dance traditions in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, a digital storytelling project led by young people in Aruba, and the first interactive digital archive for local heritage and culture from the British Virgin Islands.

The round worked in tandem with call 5, which focuses on residencies and fellowships to give Caribbean artists space to develop new projects while making professional connections.

To date, the Caribbean Culture Fund has 100 projects across 32 countries under its portfolio.
