Sebastian Kempe and Adriana Penruddocke maintained their strong positions in the International Laser Class Association fleet at the Central American and Caribbean Games on Tuesday.

Penruddocke had an impressive display at Salinas Beach by sweeping her three races on the third day of racing. She is top of the ILCA 6 leaderboard with nine points.

Kempe slipped from joint top to third in the ILCA 7 after securing first in his opening race of the day before finishing third in the next two. He is now on 13 points but is just one behind joint leaders, Luc Chevrier, of St Lucia, and Pedro Luis Fernández Gamboa, from Puerto Rico.

Penruddocke and Kempe each race twice on Wednesday. If they remain in the top five in their respective fleets, they have a chance to compete for medals on Friday.

Charles Baillie-Strong, Kempe’s coach, felt conditions were tough to master.

“It was a very hard day today,” Baillie-Strong told The Royal Gazette.

“Racing took place on the closest course to the beach. It was a windy and shifty day with some very close racing.

“Sebastian struggled to start well today and was on catch-up against his closest rivals. In race six he came from behind and sailed extremely fast and smart downwind to win comfortably.

“Race seven and eight were a struggle and after trailing at the first mark he pushed hard all the way but was unable to make up the distance and finished third in both races.

“Overtaking opportunities in the shifty conditions were few and far between and he has slipped to third overall, but only one point behind the leader.

“With two races to go, it will come down to the last race to separate the medals. Every place is crucial.”

In netball, Bermuda suffered their second loss in the competition as they were beaten 79-19 by Jamaica. Jahtuere Trott scored most points for the Bermudians with 13, her twin sister Jahkenya scored four times, while Selah Tuzo was on target twice.

The Longtails face St Lucia in their third match of the single round-robin on Wednesday (3pm Bermuda time).
