Adriana Penruddocke and Sebastian Kempe are all but guaranteed sailing medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games, with only the colour to be determined.

Penruddocke continued her domination of the ILCA 6 fleet in Dominican Republic by winning both races on Wednesday, taking her record to seven wins and two runner-up finishes in her ten-race qualifying series. She jettisoned her worst result, which is a sixth-place finish in race one.

Those results ensured she finished top of the leaderboard with 11 points, ahead of Elena Ramirez, of Mexico, on 19 points and Marina Escudero, of Puerto Rico, on 29 points.

The CAC Games is trialling a new scoring system for the Olympic Games, which means that despite Penruddocke’s superiority over her rivals, she is still not guaranteed the gold medal.

Under the new system all scores are recalibrated so that there are no more than four points between places on finals day. The two medal races are also worth double points so Penruddocke can still be caught, but the margins of her victories have been so huge that it will take a huge reversal of form for her to be beaten.

Kempe faces a bigger struggle to bring home a medal in the ILCA 7 after finishing his qualifying series in third place.

He recorded finishes of third and second in his final two qualifying to end the ten-race series on 19 points. That total is just three behind fleet leader Pedro Gamboa, of Puerto Rico, and one behind Luc Chevrier, of St Lucia.

But with Kempe 21 points ahead of Joshua Higgins, of Bahamas, he is assured of a medal. However, two wins on finals day could give Bermuda the chance of claiming double gold on the water on Friday.

Elsewhere at the CAC Games, there was disappointment for Dage Minors, who finished tenth in the 1,500 metres in Santo Domingo.

Minors, a bronze medal-winner at the Games in El Salvador in 2023, faced an uphill task this time around and fought hard to stay in touch with the main pack.

He crossed the line in 3min 53.93sec behind winner Eduardo Herrera, of Mexico, who recorded a time of 3:46.07. His compatriot, Ryan Adams, finished second, with Cuba’s Hansel Abreu third.

Bermuda’s netball team produced probably their best performance at the Games in a 44-29 defeat by St Lucia.

Bermuda were level at 10-10 when the first quarter came to an end and were just four points behind at half-time before fading late on.

Jahkenya Trott was Bermuda’s leading scorer, finding the net with 21 of her 31 attempts. Her sister, Jahtuere, scored with three of her four attempts, with Selah Tuzo contributing five points from seven chances.
