Bermuda endured mixed fortunes on the opening day of the 2026 Team Racing World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden today.

Led by skippers Alan Frith and Joshua Greenslade, the island’s two teams posted a 5-5 record competing in variable conditions in the one-design J80 class, on the waters of Riddarfjärden in their opening ten first round robin races.

Bermuda got off to a shaky start after losing their opening race to USA 1, but immediately bounced back picking up their first win at the expense of the host nation in their second.

The joy was short-lived as they lost their next four races against Great Britain, New Zealand, Denmark and Bahamas.

However, Bermuda’s fortunes took a turn for the better after reeling off four straight victories against Ireland, Finland, Japan and Australia to come back ashore in much brighter spirits.

Frith said he and his team-mates are pleased overall with the day’s results.

“We dropped a few races we should have won, so we feel we could have been better. “But we’re very much in the hunt for the gold fleet, so overall we’re happy,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“Conditions started very light when we dropped a race to Bahamas, but we went back and forth all day and were able to steal a race from the Irish at the end. We were behind until the last mark rounding.

“The breeze had picked up a lot by the end, gusting into the high teens.

“Just one race for us in the first round-robin tomorrow, and then we'll move into the second full round-robin.”

Greenslade is the skipper of Boat 1, whose crew also includes Amelia Lewis, Aiden Young and Emily Davis.

Frith is at the helm of Boat 2 and is competing alongside Cecilia Wollman, Samantha Dill and Sebastian Round.

Bermuda are presently seventh in the 12-nation standings.

Leaders USA 1 (9-10) and second place USA 2 (8-9) dominated the opening day of racing, while third place Sweden (6-9) came away with six wins under their belt.

Bermuda finished tenth of the twelve teams at last year’s Team Racing World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, which they are hoping to improve on this time around.
