Bermuda Under-14 coach Vashun Blanchette has hailed his players for fighting their way into the semi-finals of the Caribbean Football Union Challenge Series in Dominican Republic.

Blanchette’s team secured a spot in the Tier 1 last four as the best runner-up across three groups. Unbeaten with five points, they finished second in their group and now face Jamaica today (12.30pm Bermuda time) for a place in the final.

“We’re extremely pleased to have qualified for Friday’s semi-final,” Blanchette told The Royal Gazette.

“Across the three group games, the boys have improved with each performance, and it’s been encouraging to see that progression.”

In their final Group A fixture on Wednesday, Bermuda battled to a goalless draw with the host nation, who topped the group with seven points.

It was a superb defensive display from the Island’s up-and-coming stars, as they shut out a side that had scored eight goals in two matches.

“I’m especially proud of the performance against Dominican Republic,” the coach said.

“It was a physically demanding game against a very good opponent, and the boys showed a lot of desire and character to get the required result.

“Collectively, we will use Thursday to recover and go over a few details as we prepare for another opportunity to represent the country.”

Bermuda’s 2024 campaign was one to remember. Playing in Tier 2 in Trinidad & Tobago, the Gombey Warriors made it all the way to the final, only to suffer a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out loss to Barbados after the match had ended goalless in regulation time.

“As a coaching staff, we’re extremely proud of what the boys have accomplished so far, particularly given that this is our first time competing at the Tier 1 level of the Challenge Series,” Blanchette added.

“Ultimately, we’ve shown that we belong at this level, but we also know that a great challenge lies ahead.”
