A global humanitarian group founded in Bermuda is working with partners in Nepal to provide support in the aftermath of a devastating flood that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people this week.

The Adara Group moved into action following the disaster, which happened when an avalanche of ice and rock triggered massive flash floods that swept through parts of the Nepal and China border on Wednesday.

The BBC reported that at least 389 people died in Nepal while hundreds, mainly tourists, remain missing from the floods which destroyed homes, swamped roads and swept away bridges.

Adara — founded in Bermuda in 1998 — said there was significant loss of life and severe damage across a number of districts in Nepal where the group has worked for more than 28 years.

The group is assessing the impacts of the disaster on the communities it serves.

It said its staff are safe, adding that the Nuwakot District — where Adara's work across seven schools in Ghyangfedi is based — has been badly affected by the disaster.

Adara’s project sites have not been directly impacted at this stage, the group said.

Its risk committee was activated and is working closely with local authorities, community leaders and government agencies as the situation continues to unfold.

The team will be working with affected communities, local and national government agencies, and other organisations to provide medical, food and shelter support, as well as support for child protection as they expect a rise in child trafficking and risks for displaced children.

Audette Exel, the group’s chairwoman, said: “Bermuda was at the heart of Adara's journey right at our beginning. Bermuda will always hold a special place in Adara's story.

“From our earliest days, Bermudians have stood alongside us as we worked with communities living in extreme poverty.

“When Nepal was devastated by the 2015 earthquake, the Bermuda community responded with extraordinary generosity and compassion.

“Many Bermudians have again reached out with messages of concern and offers of support, and I want to sincerely thank them.

“We will continue to keep our friends and supporters in Bermuda updated as the situation develops.

“As always, I am inspired by the way people from one side of the world to another reach out to each other in times of need.”

Ms Exel, who previously served as managing director of Bermuda Commercial Bank, said the compassion shown by the island’s community over the years “showcases global citizenship and reminds us that even from thousands of miles away, people can make a profound difference”.
