Nahki Wells and his Luton Town team-mates were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat away to Premier League opponents Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.

The Bermuda striker entered the fray in the 78th minute with the away side trailing 1-0 and seeking a vital equaliser.

However, Luton’s fate was sealed before Wells had even had a touch of the ball when Chelsea winger Estevao’s low drive struck Hatters defender Hakeem Odofin en route to goal.

Chelsea’s class shone through as they dominated possession throughout this second- round clash and they struck the woodwork twice either side of the break.

Midfielder Cole Palmer and Estevao missed good chances before midfielder Morgan Rogers hit the bar with the last kick of the half.

Former Manchester United and England forward Danny Welbeck finally broke Luton’s resistance in the 50th minute with a bullet header from French international Malo Gusto’s inch-perfect cross to cap a brilliant debut for Chelsea in his nineteenth season playing in England's top league.

Luton began creating openings in the attacking third in search of an equaliser, with Jamaican midfielder Kasey Palmer, who scored in the Reggae Boyz’ 4-0 demolition of Bermuda in a World Cup qualifier at Flora Duffy Stadium last year, dragging a low shot just wide of the near post.

However, Odoffin’s own goal ultimately brought Luton’s run in the competition to a halt, with Chelsea substitute Jamie Gittens nearly adding a third when his low effort struck the far post.

Chelsea will now face Premier League rivals Leeds United in the next round, while Wells and his team-mates will be keen to get back to winning ways after suffering their first loss in 16 matches in all competitions, ending the longest unbeaten run among England's top four leagues.
