Emma Simmons warmed up for the Heineken Pickleball World Cup in the best possible way by winning bronze for Bermuda in Da Nang, Vietnam on Wednesday.

The Bermudian won four of her five matches in the women’s amateur 3.5 50+ division. She capped her fine run with a 21-15 triumph over Kunpawee Aphichatabut, of Thailand, in the bronze-medal match to secure the island’s second medal of the tournament.

“It feels amazing to win a medal for Bermuda,” Simmons said.

“I might have shed a tear after I won that last match because the whole day was a roller-coaster ride.”

Her podium finish follows the silver medals won earlier in the week by Vincent Chaves and Jose Barosa in the men’s amateur 50+ doubles.

Attention now turns to the national team competition, which starts on Thursday. Simmons will link up with Chaves, Barosa, Natalie Chaves and Edgar Griffith as Bermuda enters the team event.

The island is only fielding a seniors squad and have been drawn in a tough Group F alongside Singapore, Chinese Taipei and Ukraine. All three round-robin matches will be played on the same day, with Bermuda looking to advance out of the group and into the knockout rounds.

Vietnam-based Bermudian Imani Phillips featured in the professional women’s singles, where she was eliminated in the round of 64. She also teamed up with Yaniv Semo, from Cayman Islands, in the mixed doubles, but the pair fell in the opening round.

While she joined her team-mates for the official opening ceremony on Wednesday, Phillips will watch the remainder of the World Cup from the sidelines as Bermuda are not fielding an elite team.
