Runners take on the weather in Swan’s Labour Day 5K
Labour day officially heralds the start of Bermuda’s running season and some familiar faces took to the roads on Monday morning to compete in the Swan’s Labour Day 5k Road Race.
Those taking part would have been more thankful for the cool, rainy conditions than those participating in the Labour Day parade a couple of hours later, with overcast conditions and rain playing a feature role.
Despite the inclement weather more than 150 hardy souls braved the elements on a new course, with the race this year starting at the junction of Langton Hill and North Shore Road and finishing at Dutton Avenue.
It was one of Bermuda’s rising stars who took home top honours, with Jake Brislane the only runner to break 16 minutes, crossing the line in 15min 54sec. That was 43 seconds clear of his nearest rival Kallan Richardon, who stopped the clock in 16:37. Sanchez Smith finished third in 17:23.
Christine Dailey had time to high-five her children as she approached the finish line to claim the title of fastest woman in the race.
Dailey finished seventh overall in 18:36, nearly a minute faster than the second female finisher Stepanka Srincova (19:23), with Rose-Anna Hoey (20:15) finishing third.
In the junior race over 2.65km, which started and finished on Dutton Avenue, first prize went to Nicholas Gomez Caines in a time of 7:29. George Morris and Heath Kemp battled it our for minor honours, with the former clocking 7:54, just a second a head of the latter.
Izzy Stevens was the first girl home in 9:08, beating Julia Cunningham and Indigo Kemp into second and third respectively.
The 5km walk was won by Laura Wright (33:43) ahead of Junior Watts (38:25) and Neil Ratteray (39:14)
