Eleven Bermuda players will be in action at the Jamaica International Pickleball Open which started yesterday and finishes tomorrow in Kingston.

Wenda Roberts, Lavern Stowe, Naphisa Smith, Patricia Mills, Rachel Sawden, Lily Hallett, Duane Symonds, Jamie Stowe, Ben Jones, Mical Russell and Gavin Manders are flying the island’s flag in the various divisions at Pickle & Chill.

Yesterday started with the singles, before the action swings into the doubles over the weekend. Manders and Jones are the champions in the men’s doubles, having defeated the highly rated pair of Canadian Ernesto Fajardo and Kobi Stiebel, from Jamaica, 11-7, 11-4 in the final a year ago.

Manders, the former Davis Cup player, was meant to feature in the mixed doubles with the Massachusetts-based Sasha Fisher, but she withdrew from the three-day event.

“We have a big group from Bermuda that’s in Jamaica,” Manders said.

“They will be playing in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The highest level is the prize pool divisions in each of the categories.

“I was supposed to be playing with Sasha Fisher in the prize pool mix and the open elite mix, but she pulled out.”
