Sanchez Smith and Christine Dailey take Powerade 5K titles
The second running race of the new season took place around Devonshire on Sunday morning.
Unlike the initial contest last week, the Labour Day 5K, which was held in difficult conditions, the weather was perfect for the Powerade 5K, which took place in Orange Valley.
More than 100 athletes took to the start line but it was Sanchez Smith, who crossed the finish line in isolation to take first place.
Smith, who won a silver medal for Bermuda in the under-17 3,000 metres at the Carifta Games in Grenada in April, stopped the Powerade 5K clock in 17min 27.38sec.
Runner-up Oliver Brunnock was 17 seconds back in a time of 17:44.63, with Tim Price claiming the final spot on the podium in 19:03.78.
While Smith ensured that youth came to the fore in the men’s race, experience told in the women’s race with some familiar names taking the glory.
Christine Dailey followed up her win in the Labour Day 5K with another this weekend. She finished in 19:41.22 to finish a fantastic fourth overall.
She had more than 40 seconds to spare over Stepanka Sprincova, who was sixth overall in 20:22.39. Mae Tirfe was the third female to cross the line in 20:42.63
